‘Shopping malls have destroyed the habit of visiting other places in the city to spend time’said one of my friends and I can’t deny this statement. All we want is a air conditioned place to sit and chat that we almost started to ignore other interesting places around the city. Boating at Chetpet Lake is one such interesting attraction which I have been ignoring for so long.
One fine day I planned to visit the place just out of curiosity. What amazed me first is the calm, serine, neatly maintained place in the middle of the hustling city. I could not find any plastic wastes all around the lake which is a very good thing.Though boating is a main attraction here, there are other things such as angling/sport fishing, children play area, walking track, cafeteria etc.
The entree fee at Chetpet lake for adults – Inr 25/- for kids – Inr 10/-
The boating fee at Chetpet lake adults – Inr 50/- for kids Inr – 25/-
For fishing/angling – Inr 300/-
Though it was a weekend, the crowd was moderate in the waiting area for boating. I have waited for 10-15 minutes before getting a boat. I heard there is a rowing boat as well but when I went, there was only peddling boats which can occupy 4. If all the 4 are adults, 2 can sit each side and have to pedal on our own. There will be a guide coming alone. If there is a kid accompanying, the guide can be one of the peddlers.
Overall boating took around 15 to 20 minutes but if you are peddling, your thighs can start to pain within 5 minutes because of no prior practice. But as only one person will be peddling at a time, you can take turn when the other gets tired. Nevertheless, I would have preferred a rowing boat to enjoy the peaceful environment around.
It is a great initiative that they have provided life jacket. If boating doesn’t interests you, just a stroll around the walking track surrounded by greenaries would be a calming as well. There are plenty of stone benches available in which you can sit and chat.
Other than angling where you can catch fish with guidance of an expert, there is no other adventure activity here. So I am not sure how well this place will be of interest to people looking for something interesting and adventurous. But kids will totally enjoy the boating and the children park.
The walking track seems to be an attraction as well among the fitness freaks. Around 5-5.30 PM I was able to spot many walkers on the walking track. There is per month (Inr 200/-), 6 months (Inr 1000/-) and 1 year (Inr 2000/-) packages are available for using the walking track.
Chetpet park timing : 9.00 Am – 6.00 Pm

If you are tired of visiting malls and clueless about the places to visit in Chennai, give boating at chetpet lake a try 🙂
